Solstice Celebration 2011
The Solstice celebration for the WWAG Group is always a wonderful event!  Members start off the day around 1:00 and work on art projects for several hours.  Then they switch to party mode and have a merry time.  They have dinner, give each other hand-made presents, sing songs and celebrate the longer days and increasing light in the days to come.  It's all about light.  See some of their light celebrations below.

One of the best traditions of the WWAG Solstice Party is that members all bring a source of light to give as a gift to another member. Many of these are hand-made and astounding.  This is a picture of some of the hand-made sources.  See closeups below. Pat made this astounding light with wire, fiber optics and a chunk of a cherry tree that she had to chop down after the hurricane ripped it apart in the fall.  The contrast between the warm natural wood and the cool, even icy, silver wire tree made this light a unique and amazing work of art.

Susan's light was also a tree but very different from and much larger than Pat's.  This one is made of three branches which are lighted.  They are planted in a pot with rocks of various sizes.  This is so beautiful - organic and contemporary.  In fact, everyone was surprised that Pat and Susan's lights were very similar in theme.  And both amazing!

In some ways, Robin's light was everyone's favorite!  To everyone's surprise, she used a gift bag in which she put christmas-type lights intermingled with a purple tin-foil boa.  The combination made a very interesting pattern across the bag and, if you didn't know what was inside, you would never guess it - never!  There were many "ooohs" and "aaaahs" and "oh my goshes" when Robin revealed the secret behind this fascinating creation!

Sherri made a light out of sea shells, holly and miniature lights.  She had recently visited Cape Cod and fell in love with Provincetown and the ocean, so this piece was very dear to her heart.  The light shines through the shells and shows off the graceful lines of the scallops and back lights the holly.  We all loved this beautiful arrangement of natural elements all lit up with brilliant light! Jessey's light is a ribbon light inside a glass block.  It's very simple but the reflections of the light in the glass and the absence of any embellishments makes this a light that shines clear and bright.  The effect is simple beauty at its best.

In the bottom of the paper bag that Robin made her light from was this beautiful yarn scarf that she made.  Since Pat was the recipient of Robin's light, she also received this very cool scarf.  Wow.  Now isn't she artsy? Sherri holds her Pioneer award - see more about this award on the Annual Achievement Award page - click on the tab above.
